SINGING LESSONS

Melinda is a highly qualified and experienced contemporary singer, and singing teacher. She was recently Head of Voice at Box Hill Institute of TAFE for the tertiary degree and diploma courses, was the consultant for the Contemporary Voice curriculum in the Master of Music Performance Teaching at the Melbourne Conservatorium (University of Melbourne), and has taught vocal courses at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Melinda is a vocal examiner and adjudicator, and regularly presents workshops on singing and musicianship, to teachers and students.

 

Melinda has an extensive performance background. She began singing professionally with her parents' band at the age of 16 years, and the went on to front various bands in Melbourne and Brisbane. With her sight-reading skills and her ability to create harmonies on the spot, Melinda became a busy session singer, recording numerous jingles and backing vocals for radio and television.

Melinda holds a Bachelor of Music, majoring in Jazz Voice, from the Queenland Conservatorium; and a Master of Music with a focus on vocal pedagogy (the practice of teaching singing), as well as several qualifications in voice, music and education. She was the first Australian to complete a Certificate in Vocology (the science of voice habilitation) at the National Centre for Voice and Speech, University of Utah, under Dr Ingo Titze. This course focused on vocal anatomy, physiology and many elements of speech therapy and how it relates to vocal production.

 

Melinda is a professional member of the Australian National Association for Teachers of Singing. She is currently undertaking a PhD in music education at Monash University. For more information & qualifications, click here.
 

Although Melinda teaches students of various ages and stages, she focuses much of her teaching on VCE singing students, and also kids and teens with autism, and individuals with speech disorders.
